Where do Mountain Gorillas Live?
Mountain gorillas have gained an international fame in the past two decades and have risen to become the great African safari product attracting myriad of world travelers to undertake safaris to areas where they exist including gorilla safaris in Uganda and Rwanda.
The Mountain gorillas are known to be thriving in the mountainous landscapes that stand at the interconnection of East and central Africa in only three countries on the entire global scale.
This habitat is divided in two sections but adjacent to each other to the extent that when a person is standing in one, he / she is able to view the other.
The first habitat is Bwindi Impenetrable National Park located in the rolling Kigezi Highlands featuring a count of 400 minimum populations of mountain gorillas that thrive in the raised Afro montane forest marked by great flora including Bamboo densely compacted that have earned it a crown as the impenetrable and presenting the great food concentration for the mountain gorillas that are encountered on Uganda gorilla safaris.
The dense undergrowth of Bwindi marked by tall lush trees perched on rolling hills that are intercepted by the deep valleys and impressive streams present a cool and serene environment suitable for the thriving of mountain gorillas and also an interesting destination to track gorillas by the world travelers on gorilla tracking tours in Uganda.
The second habitat is the Virunga massif which is a chain of eight (8) volcanic mountains that emerge from the south western tip of Uganda to traverse the north west of Rwanda and eventually end in the Democratic Republic of Congo.
The Mountains are sheltered by a range of National Parks on each side of the country. The Mgahinga Gorilla National Park shelter the Ugandan side and host the peaks of Muhabura, Gahinga and Sabyinyo mountains, the Volcanoes National Park shelter the Rwandan side of the 5 volcanoes including the mentioned three on top of Bisoke and Karismbi while the Virunga National Park shelter the Congo side of the Mikeno, Nyiragongo, Nyamulagira, Karisimbi, Bisoke and Sabyinyo mountains.
The Virunga massif hosts an estimated number of 480 mountain gorillas that combine with those of Bwindi to make an estimate number of 880 mountain gorillas which are believed to thriving in the wild. The Volcanoes National Park presents a single destination for gorilla trekking safaris in Rwanda.
