Previously, the Batwa pygmies shared the forest with Bwindi’s mountain gorillas. This tribe of hunter-gatherers lived in its caves and trees for many years back.

Although they never hunted gorillas, their proximity increased the risk of infection to animals.

As the original dwellers of this ancient jungle, the Batwa were known as The Keepers of the Forest.

The history of these small-statured people is long and rich.

The Batwa people lived by hunting small animals using arrows or nets and collecting plants and fruit in the rain forest.

They lived in huts made of leaves and branches, moving often in search of fresh supplies of food. The Batwa lived on good terms with the forest and its creatures, including the mountain gorillas.

Today, the Batwa communities benefiting from tourism and making a living that keeps them from poaching and turns them towards conservation of the forest and of the wildlife and Primates.

The Batwa Experience takes place just outside of the Bwindi Impenetrable Forest and includes hunting and gathering ways, but also about how the Batwa People used to live, prepare food, collect their medicine from plants, roots, and bark.

You can visit this interesting pygmy tribe while on your Gorilla trekking safari in Uganda. The other option is to arrange a visit by yourself via your tour operator. In both options, the majority of your contribution is going straight to benefiting the Batwa community.

The Batwa experience takes place in Buhoma, Buniga, and Mgahinga.  Those who take part in these 5 hours plus experience simply love it and take with them some great memories.
