The Mubare Gorilla Family in Buhoma Bwindi National Impenetrable Park
In fact, the Mubare Family was the first ever Gorilla Family to be habituated way back in 1991, and the first ever travelers to come for Gorilla Trekking in Uganda tracked this family in 1993.
At first, the family consisted of 12 family members, but unfortunately, by the time their leader, the silverback Ruhondeza died only 5 family members were left.
In the fall of 2013, four other gorillas joined the Mubare gorilla family and there are now nine family member as members of other groups have fully become part of the Mubare group.
The members include one silverback, black back, one adult female and two juveniles. The increase in number has made Gorilla trekking in Uganda more satisfying to undertake.
The ease of tracking with the Mubare group varies, though its considered the easiest Uganda Gorilla Trekking experience – this family used to be closer to the Buhoma Park Region Headquarters but sometimes, it can take over a 5-hour round-trip to track the famous group.
When the Mubare group was six and then five in number after the death of their lead silverback Ruhondeza tour operators and visitors avoided using the group for visitation but that has changed in recent times since their number has risen to 9 due to new strong leadership from the new Silverback who has taken charge of the group.
The word Mubare came from the area where the group was first discovered in Bwindi Impenetrable Forest.
