Nkuringo is one of the four regions of Bwindi Impenetrable National Park where gorilla trekking activity is conducted.
Named after a round hill, Nkuringo has one gorilla family named Nkuringo that has been habituated for trekking experience along with other gorilla families in other regions of Bwindi including the Busingye, Kahungye, Nshongi, Bweza and Mishaya in Rushaga, Oruzogo, Bitukura and Kyaguriro in Ruhija and Mubare, Habinyanja and Rushegura in Buhoma which combine to ensure the thriving of gorilla tracking safaris in Uganda.
Nkuringo is positioned in the south east of Bwindi impenetrable National Park and is very close to Democratic Republic of Congo boarder.
Although it is famously known for its challenging terrain that makes trekking Nkuringo gorilla family a bit strenuous, the journey to Nkuringo is another wonder to note.
Branching off from the main Kabale – Kisoro road, the rough surface road traverses the steep hill sides of Kigezi highlands appearing in zigzag movement that you may be prompted to think the area has many roads when it is only one road.
The protruding rocks stand on the slopes above you as if they are going to lose up and crush your gorilla safari vehicle while the gorges that appear below some of which contain seasonal streams will lure a fearful traveller to pressure of falling over.
The experience of maneuvering through the sharp corners will only leave you at the mercy of your driver.
Interestingly to note is that this road connection is an experience of its own and travellers may lose concentration over the road carvings and how the driver is going to maneuver over the landscapes to concentrate on the impressive scenery that mark the area.
Dubbed the Switzerland of Africa, the Kigezi highlands are an attraction in themselves. One has to marvel on the natural setting of the area and how the local people (the Bakiga) have managed to cultivate the steep slopes using their traditional knowledge of terracing and using sticks to hold legumes like beans that can be easily washed away by running water.
The raised topography offers travellers on this Uganda gorilla tour memorable view of the entire Virunga massif on a clear day including the Uganda’s Muhabura, Gahinga and Sabyinyo and Rwanda’s Bisoke, Mikeno and Karisimbi volcanoes. The Congo’s Nyiragongo and Nyamulagira can be luckily seen at night with smoke arising from them.
The journey to Nkuringo takes the Uganda gorilla safari undertaker through the villages of Rushaga and Rubuguri before arriving in the mighty Nkuringo for gorilla trekking wonder.
