Chimpanzees are commonly found in Kibale National Park and in Kyambura Gorge which is located in Queen Elizabeth National Park. These interesting primates are considered to be the largest primates among the great apes. They have increased many chimpanzee tracking safaris to Uganda.
Just the gorilla naming ceremonies carried out in Rwanda and Uganda, chimpanzees have been named, which has contributed to increase in safaris to Uganda since many visitors have travelled to Uganda to enjoy this ceremony.
At Kyambura, 24 chimpanzees were baptised and were given names on the day of promoting conservation of the chimps. This ceremony is mainly carried because there is need to create awareness among the people about the chimpanzees which are the closest relatives to the humans. This will help in increasing chimpanzee trekking safaris to Uganda.
A chimpanzee tracking visit to either Kibale or Kyambura Gorge will expose to some of the names given to the named chimps, and these include; Murefu, which was given to the tallest chimp in the park, Kazinga which was named after the Kazinga channel, Asante is another name which is in Swahili and it means thank you and Pesa which means money and many more names which are named to these primates.
Chimpanzees are regarded as the second best popular attraction after the mountain gorillas in Bwindi impenetrable National Park. These have been facing many challenges like parching, encroachment and diseases which have tried to reduce their numbers, hence affecting chimpanzee safaris to Uganda.
With the increased tourism in Uganda, it’s good to hear that this naming ceremony is encouraged with in the country, therefore more efforts should be put in order to make the occasion bigger in order to attract more tourists to Uganda.
