Uganda is geographically landlocked with no direct access to the coast. Most of its products pass through Kenya and Tanzania while others are transported by Air.
The people who undertake safaris in Uganda have always found it hard to connect to Uganda using surface travel while Air connection has proved to be expensive.
The launch of standard gauge railway project estimated at 8b Shillings is seen as a perfect effort towards betterment of surface connection with in the region and connection of Uganda to the coast.
The Uganda safari undertakers can easily connect by rail from Nairobi to Uganda dodging hefty air fares or long driving distances. The launched rail is set to be achieved in 2018.
Apparently, an economy return ticket between Nairobi and Entebbe is $700 while a business ticket between Nairobi and Juba is $1,800 which relatively similar to a cost of ticket to Europe.
This appears to be expensive compared to the distance between these destinations which partly affects safaris between these areas including safaris to Uganda.
The construction of this rail connection will allow time constrained travellers to connect easily to Uganda while its position could definitely pose an alternative to the expensive air travel in the region which will definitely increase mobility in the region and definitely enhance the consumption of products like gorilla trekking safaris, chimpanzee trekking safaris and wildlife safaris in Uganda.
