ENCOUNTERING THE PRIMATES OF UGANDA – UGANDA SAFARI NEWS

Uganda a country blessed by nature and famously known as the Pearl of Africa, is a habitat to remarkable and endangered primate species of varied families and classifications, ranging from the most endangered Mountain Gorillas always explored on Uganda gorilla safaris, the human’s closest relatives – Chimpanzees and the most elusive golden monkeys, baboons, etc.

Primates in Uganda tend to dwell in numerous ecosystems, commonly found in dense rainforests, mountains and marshy lands, as well as savannah areas. Uganda is also blessed to be the sole country in the world with the highest concentration of primate species in a single conservation area, Kibale Forest National Park with 13 primate species, hence earning it a title as the “primate capital of Africa”, with rich ground for chimpanzee trekking tours in Uganda, as well as the chimpanzee habituation experience in Uganda. Other sites with Chimpanzees include; Budongo Forest Reserve, Kyambura gorge, Kalinzu Forest Reserve and Semuliki Valley National Park.

The most notable primate species in Uganda dwell in lush forests of western and far south western parts of Uganda, including Bwindi and Mgahinga Gorilla National Parks. The Mountain Gorillas are one of most unique apes and arguably the second largest living primate species in the world, dwelling within the Virunga Mountains and Bwindi Impenetrable National Park.

Gorilla trekking safaris in Uganda are done only in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park with a minimum of 400 Mountain Gorillas and Mgahinga Gorilla National Park all in the south west of Uganda bordering Rwanda in the south and DR Congo in the west. In fact, Mgahinga Gorilla National Park is part of the greater Virunga massif where the remaining 480 Mountain Gorillas are known to thrive. This cross border interaction presents a perfect ground for gorilla safaris in Uganda Rwanda Congo.

Besides Mountain Gorillas and Chimpanzees, Uganda is also home to golden Monkeys found in Mgahinga Gorilla National Park, Black and white colobus monkeys, vervet monkeys, Olive baboons, red-tailed monkey among others which combine to make primate tours in Uganda worth undertaking.
