Encounter the Old Man’s Teeth – The Sabyinyo Volcano

The Sabyinyo Volcano also known as the old man’s teeth, is one of the famous Uganda safari attractions thriving at the extreme corner of south western Uganda.

The Sabyinyo Volcano is part of the greater Virunga Massif that comprises of eight volcanoes connecting the countries of Uganda, Rwanda and Democratic Republic of Congo.

The Sabyinyo Volcano standing at 3,669m above sea level lies along Muhavura which towers to 4,127m and Mount Gahinga that towers 3,474m forming the Uganda side of the Virunga range.

It is protected by Mgahinga Gorilla National Park which s famously known for containing the two world’s critically endangered species of golden monkeys and mountain gorillas thus forming a rich ground for golden monkey tracking safaris and gorilla trekking safaris and tours in Uganda.

The Sabyinyo Volcano derives its name Sabyinyo from the rugged top that it has developed overtime due to denudation.

Being the oldest Volcano, the mountain has developed rugged top which the locals called Sabyinyo translated as Old man’s teeth in English because at old age people tend to lose some of the teeth leaving gaps in the dental formula.

Mount Sabyinyo presents impressive volcano climbing encounter because of its swamp crater on top and series of peaks that leave the Uganda safari undertakers in a state of amusement. The climb takes about 8 hours round trip and stretches for 14km.

The peak of Sabyinyo Volcano gives you an impressive scenic view of the land of a thousand hills – Rwanda, the Impenetrable forest of Bwindi, towns of Kisoro in Uganda and Bunagana in Congo and the range of volcanoes that characterize the area. Thus, it is rewarding to encounter while on Uganda safaris and tours.
