Congo Tours to Kahuzi Biega National Park – Congo Safari News
The Kahuzi-Biega National Park, also known as Parc National De Kahuzi-Biega is situated in Eastern Democratic Republic of Congo, 40 km away from the bustling town of Bukavu in southern Kivu province, at the south western boarder of Rwanda and is one of the outstanding Congo safari sites.
The park was established in 1970 to protect the world’s largest species of gorillas (Grauer’s Gorilla), and the destination has remained the premier refuge for these particular gorilla species in the world.
It derived its name from Mt. Kahuzi and Mt. Biega, the 2 magnificent dormant volcanoes towering to an altitude ranging between 3,308 to 2,790m meters.
The eastern lowland gorillas are famous primates that habour the Eastern part of Democratic Republic of Congo.
With numerous natural endowments, D.R. Congo is blessed with a multitude of flora and fauna making it Africa’s top ranked virgin adventure holiday destination because of its amazing attractions such as the endangered Eastern Lowland Gorillas, the Okapis and Mountain Gorillas.
Kahuzi Biega National Park is the proud home of the Eastern Lowland Gorilla also called Grauer’s Gorilla; notably the largest of all the four subspecies of gorillas differentiated by its large hands and muscular body.
Despite the size of these lowland gorillas, it survives mainly on herbaceous materials and fruits just like any other gorilla subspecies.
The Congo gorilla trekking safaris in the Kahuzi-Biega National Park avails you a memorable adventure safari to encounter with the few surviving Eastern lowland gorillas in Africa.
However, there are currently only two gorilla groups habituated and open for trekking by visitors who desire to adventure into this park.
Besides tracking the lowland gorillas, Kahuzi Biega is also home to over 135 other species of mammals including 12 primate species, such as the eastern chimpanzees, baboons, red tailed monkey, blue monkey and others. The mammals that can be spotted here include forest elephants, civets, leopards, duikers and many antelopes.
The park is a habitat to 336 bird species making it an appropriate destination for travelers looking for birding safaris in Congo.
Most birds in Kahuzi-Biega National Park are endemic to the Albertine Rift; some birds found here include the Rockefeller’s sunbird, Grauer’s broadbill, Shelley’s Crimsonwing, and Ruwenzori Turaco.
Other species to look out for are amphibians and reptiles, including 69 dangerous reptiles and 44 amphibian species; a tour to Parc national de Kahuzi – Biega will obviously leave you with an experience to remember.
